WASHINGTON, D.C. — Federal health officials have issued an urgent food safety alert following a rapidly growing outbreak of Cyclospora infections across multiple states, with epidemiologists tracing the source to contaminated restaurant salads and commercial pre-packaged lettuce mixes.

Understanding the Cyclospora Outbreak

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), alongside the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), are investigating dozens of confirmed cases tied to fresh produce distributed to restaurants and grocery store chains.

  • Symptoms to Watch For: Cyclosporiasis is an intestinal illness caused by a microscopic parasite. Common symptoms include severe watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, fatigue, and low-grade fever, which can persist for weeks if left untreated.

  • The Incubation Period: Symptoms typically begin anywhere from one to two weeks after consuming contaminated food or water, making traceback efforts particularly challenging for public health investigators.

FDA and CDC Recommendations for Consumers

With thousands of restaurant meals and grocery products impacted, health agencies have released specific guidelines for consumers and food service operators.

Key Safety and Prevention Guidelines

  • Check Your Fridge: Consumers who purchased pre-packaged salad mixes, bagged spinach, or ready-to-eat greens from affected regional distributors are advised to check lot numbers or discard the items immediately.

  • Medical Treatment: Unlike standard bacterial food poisoning, Cyclospora infections require specific antibiotic treatment (typically trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole) prescribed by a physician to clear the parasite.

  • Restaurant Precautions: Public health inspectors have instructed restaurants across impacted states to thoroughly sanitize food preparation surfaces and review their fresh produce supply chains.
