PITTSBURGHW. James “Jim” Choyke, a distinguished professor emeritus of physics at the University of Pittsburgh whose pioneering research helped pave the way for modern power electronics, has passed away at the age of 98.

Over a legendary career spanning more than six decades across industrial research and academia, Dr. Choyke established himself as an international authority on the optical properties of semiconductors, most notably silicon carbide (SiC).

A Legacy of Innovation in Semiconductor Physics

Dr. Choyke’s groundbreaking work on wide-bandgap semiconductors laid the essential groundwork for high-efficiency electronics used globally today—including power grids, electric vehicles, and high-frequency communication systems.

After spending 30 years as a lead research physicist at the Westinghouse Research Laboratories in Churchill, Pennsylvania, he joined the faculty at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Physics and Astronomy in 1983, where he mentored generations of graduate students and experimental physicists.
