SAN FRANCISCO, CA, USA — OpenAI has officially shaken up the artificial intelligence landscape by dropping rate limits for non-paying consumers, introducing unlimited text chats powered by the GPT-5.6 Luna model alongside a dedicated “Think” button.

In a major push to make advanced AI accessible to a wider global audience, OpenAI announced that free and “Go” tier users will now have access to unlimited text messaging without hitting traditional usage caps. Previously, free accounts faced strict message restrictions that interrupted extended brainstorming sessions or casual daily queries.

What’s New for Free vs. Paid ChatGPT Users

The latest rollout updates both ends of OpenAI’s consumer ecosystem, adjusting model architectures and introducing intuitive interface controls across web, mobile, and desktop applications.

Free and Go Tier Enhancements

  • GPT-5.6 Luna Integration: The capable Luna model now serves as the default engine for free accounts, offering higher reliability and significantly fewer factual hallucinations than previous iterations.

  • The “Think” Button: Free users can tap a newly introduced button to give the AI model extra processing time when handling complex coding, math, or multi-step logic queries.

  • Unlimited Text Conversations: Rate limits on standard text interactions have been completely removed, though auxiliary constraints on file uploads and image generations remain in place.

ChatGPT Plus and Pro Upgrades

  • An Updated GPT-5.6 Sol: Paid subscribers now benefit from a more focused, direct version of Sol that cuts down on redundant formatting and delivers tighter context.

  • The Reasoning Slider: A new interactive control allows subscribers to manually calibrate how much computational depth and processing time the model allocates to a given prompt.
