NASA Administrator Expresses High Confidence in 2027 Artemis 3 Launch Timeline

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. — NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman expressed strong confidence that the Artemis 3 mission remains on track for a 2027 launch, pointing to ongoing hardware assembly operations at Kennedy Space Center as tangible proof of progress.

Speaking alongside Kennedy Space Center leadership and Florida congressional delegates, Isaacman underscored that NASA is moving aggressively into rocket stacking in the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB) to prepare for the ambitious crewed flight.

Hardware Assembly Underway inside the Vehicle Assembly Building

The Artemis 3 architecture relies on a multi-launch sequence that includes heavy-lift launch vehicles and test lander deployments. At NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, hardware integration is actively progressing across multiple high bays:

  • Solid Rocket Booster Stacking: Technicians have stacked solid rocket booster segments inside High Bay 3, following the arrival of forward assembly nose cones.

  • Core Stage Engine Integration: Core stage engine mounting and integration continue inside High Bay 2.

  • Orion Spacecraft Operations: The Orion crew module and European Service Module have been mated together to undergo integrated electrical and environmental testing.

• Launch Vehicle: Space Launch System (SLS) Block 1
• Crew Spacecraft: Orion Spacecraft mated to European Service Module
• Launch Site: Launch Complex 39B, Kennedy Space Center, Florida
• Mission Target: Earth Orbit Rendezvous & Technical Demonstrations (2027)

Commercial Lunar Lander Rendezvous and Risk Reduction

A key element of Artemis 3 involves launching a test version of Blue Origin’s Blue Moon Mark 2 lander aboard a New Glenn rocket into low Earth orbit. Shortly thereafter, an SLS rocket will send the four-person crew aboard Orion to rendezvous and dock with the lander vehicle.

Isaacman highlighted that completing this orbital demonstration ahead of lunar surface missions will retire major technical risks for Artemis 4, scheduled for 2028.

Core Mission Milestones

  1. Commercial Pathfinder Launch: Blue Origin will orbit its test lander ahead of crew departure.

  2. SLS/Orion Liftoff: NASA will launch the SLS carrying astronauts Randy Bresnik, Luca Parmitano (ESA), Andre Douglas, and Frank Rubio.

  3. Orbital Docking Test: The Orion crew will perform rendezvous, docking, and system validation with the lander in Earth orbit.

Additional Announcements

During the briefing, NASA leadership also introduced “Max Power,” a new privately run air and space expo scheduled for early November 2026 at the Launch and Landing Facility. The event will showcase commercial landers, rovers, and aerospace technology to the public without drawing from federally appropriated NASA budgets.
