LOS ANGELES, CA, USA — Public health officials have issued an urgent advisory warning that visitors to Universal Studios Hollywood may have been exposed to a contagious case of measles.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health announced that an infectious individual visited the popular theme park, prompting widespread health checks. According to officials, the infected visitor spent nearly 11 hours at the resort on July 26, moving through the park between 10 a.m. and 9 p.m.

As national health agencies track rising numbers of preventable viral cases across the United States, local authorities are aggressively tracing secondary locations and monitoring potential exposure windows.

Understanding the Risk Window and Symptoms

Because measles is exceptionally contagious and can linger in indoor air or on surfaces for up to two hours after an infected person leaves, officials emphasize strict symptom tracking.

  • Incubation Period: Individuals potentially exposed at the park on July 26 may develop symptoms anywhere from 7 to 21 days post-exposure, putting the final monitoring deadline through mid-August.

  • Key Warning Signs: Early symptoms mirror severe respiratory illnesses, including a high fever (exceeding 101°F), persistent cough, runny nose, and red, watery eyes, followed days later by a characteristic rash spreading from the face downward.

  • Immune Status: People who are fully vaccinated with the MMR vaccine or have previously contracted measles possess strong natural protection, while unimmunized individuals remain at high risk.

Public Health Recommendations and Next Steps

Health officers urge anyone who visited the theme park during the specified timeframe to verify their immunization records immediately.

Essential Safety Guidelines

  • Monitor Closely: Watch for any sign of illness through the 21-day incubation window.

  • Contact Providers First: Anyone exhibiting symptoms is instructed to call their healthcare provider before arriving at a clinic or hospital to prevent exposing other patients.

  • Vaccination Protection: Officials reiterate that the MMR vaccine remains the safest and most effective defense against halting community transmission.
